Weather in Me / Fear, 2019
4-channel video installation, loop
The Weather in Me / Fear is a cinematic representation that explores how inner emotional states are reflected in outside conditions, such as weather and vice versa. The emotions here are understood as uncontrollable and could be compared to events happening in nature; namely wind, rain and fog.
The video installation is inspired by Timothy Morton’s ideas about Hyperobjects, including atomic bomb, climate warming or sound that are distant and close, all around us, at the same time. The work reflects it through emotional states that are connected to fear, worry, distress and oscillate with external factors, such as forces of nature.
Timothy Morton suggests that strange, uncanny feelings come together with Hyperobjects. “They are already here”, as a suddenly appearing evil character in David Lynch’s Mullholand Drive; which was a reference for one of the video-portrait, representing Fear Itself.
There’re four video-portraits, that refer to natural cycles, similar to four seasons of the year or four phases of the moon. The project pays attention to the circularity of natural events that do not necessarily have a certain linear goal. The soundtrack of the video installation includes the remade piece Cycless (1902) by the influential Lithuanian composer Mykalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis.
